Through the application of infrared thermography, the initial locations of ice formation, the spread of ice, and the progression of freezing in leaves were evaluated to understand the temporal and mechanistic interplay of freezing and thermonasty. The results demonstrate that the process of ice formation in entire plants begins in the upper portion of the stem, and progresses bidirectionally from the initial site. The vascular tissue of the midrib in the leaves was where ice formation first emerged, subsequently reaching other areas of the vascular system within the leaf. A broad commonality exists between the two methodologies' functional analyses, which motivates discussion of areas for future investigation.
